On Sunday 15th October, South Bristol Girls welcomed Avonmouth.

On a day of perfect rugby weather conditions, we were treated to a great game of rugby, which was both skillful and physical.

Avonmouth kicked off the game, and only had to go through a few short phases before going over the line to easily, but the conversion proved too difficult, and the score stayed at 5 – 0.

The game now started to kick into action, with both defences being tested, but a combination of strong tackles from Jean Alfaraj, Emma Piper & Isla Llewellyn began to take its toll on Avonmouth, eventually with SBG winning a great turnover. This resulted in the ball getting into Meg Allen’s hands and she didn’t leave any gas in the tank as she flew 60 metres down field to score under the posts, which was brilliantly converted by Lilly Chillcott. 7 – 5 going into the first interval.

The second quarter started in the same vein, with both sides showing great attacking skills, with both forwards and backs working together.

It was to be Avonmouth who proved stronger, with the first line out of the game, Avonmouth took their chances and moments later fracturing the SBG defense, they went over to register their second try of the game making it 10 – 7 with the conversion falling short.

Immediately after the restart SBG were awarded a penalty, and Lilly Chillcott stepped up and sends a howitzer of a kick down field, to give SBG some breathing space, from this came another great attacking phase from SBG. Molly Summerfield showed great skills, with more side steps than you are likely to see on strictly come dancing!

She was brought to the ground agonizingly close to the try line, which led to the whistle being blown to signal the second break of the afternoon.

10 – 7 Avonmouth.

The third session of play proved as exciting as the previous two, with Chloe Gibbard winning a superb turnover to set up another attacking spell of play.

This came to a crashing end as Avonmouth stole the ball, and charged forward, going over the try line for their 3rd score. An excellent conversion followed making it 17 -7. This is how the score board stayed until the end of the third quarter, as by now both teams were looking tired, battered, and bruised.

SBG started the final quarter, wanting to get points on the board quickly, and immediately they attacked strongly with Nay Allen scoring under the sticks, and Lilly Chillcott added the further two points. 17 – 14. The comeback was on.

The game was getting tense, and Avonmouth looked nervous, both sides attacking but strong defenses proved too much, until a spark of genius from Nay Allen, who out classed Avonmouth to register her second of the afternoon. 19 – 17 to SBG.

Avonmouth were deflated by now and it proved, SBG were running the ball for fun at this stage, and yet again the ball found its way to Nay who sprinted 50 metres to register her hat trick, to give SBG some breathing space.

The game finished soon after with the final score 24 – 17 to South Bristol Girls.
