Match Report: South Bristol Girls U14 v Tetbury U14

FROM EXTREME HEAT TO EXTREME RAIN….
South Bristol Girls meet Tetbury, for the first home game of the season, at Old Reds RFC.
A massive contrast in weather conditions from last week’s game at Luctonians, the rain today was biblical!
This was always going to make playing quality rugby a challenge, with handling almost impossible. The extreme weather is not the only challenge the SB Girls faced.
Coming up against a bigger, stronger more experienced Tetbury team, they played their first competitive match on a full-size pitch; with contested scrummaging and line outs.
Period 1
Tetbury kicked off the match, and immediately put a few patient phases of attacking play together. With great handling, passing and strong running they scored a well-deserved try in the corner to make it 5 – 0.
SBG on the defensive for much of the first 20 minutes were tackling hard and held Tetbury out on a several occasions.
After defending a concerted attack by Tetbury over several phases of play, they were rewarded for their brave defence by being awarded a penalty. This was taken quickly, and SBG were away from the danger zone.
Unfortunately, SBG struggled to get any attacking foothold in the game. The conditions turning play into a bit of a knock-on-athon. Clearly the horrendous weather conditions played their part, which Tetbury dealt with and adapted the better to.
The Tetbury side, by holding onto and retaining the ball far better than quickly got themselves back down onto SBGs try line and winning a penalty, which they easily converted, going over the whitewash for a lead of 10 – 0.
Scrummaging was soon becoming more difficult for SBG with Tetbury having a more experienced side, but the home team weren’t giving up. The pack will certainly gain more experience as the season progresses, and with experience comes confidence.
SBG spring into action, running the ball from their own line, a great passage of play by the SBG backline. Unfortunately, following some more handling errors it led to Tetbury turning over the ball. With a big gap in SBG’s defence it allowed Tetbury to register their 3rd try of the game. 15 – 0.
Period 2:
The 2nd period of the game started with Tetbury putting early pressure on SBG. However, the SBG defence held with a lot of strong tackling.
SBGs eventually engineered a turnover, with Molly Summerfield picking and going. With a strong run, breaking several tackles, it sprung the girls back into action, with superb handling skills between Molly, Nay & Lilly.
Confidence was starting to grow for the girls, with them starting to show some flashes of their attacking skills that were so potent last season.
Tetbury however had their own ideas. With SBGs not being able to retain the ball, Tetbury moved it down the field quickly, scoring a try under the posts. The conversion went over, making it 22 – 0 going into the 2nd break of the afternoon.
3rd Period
By far the most even and competitive period of the game. SBG pushed Tetbury back into their 22 and piled on the pressure.
This soon paid off as the girls registered their 1st Try of the game through speedster Nay Allen and this was excellently converted by debutante Molly Stephens. 22 – 7.
The last 10 minutes of the game were end to end with SBG making strong runs out of defence, and Tetbury doing likewise.
Tetbury capped off an all-round strong performance by scoring the last try of the game adding the conversion making the final score 29 – 7.
Summary:
With the match being a stark contrast on all levels from the match against Luctonians, SB Girls have seen and learnt a lot already this season.
This experience against Tetbury will set them up well for the season to come. They are going to come up against older, bigger, and stronger teams regularly, now they are in the U14 division.
These tougher matches will be far better for advancing their individual and team skills sets and if they continue to play with the heart and determination, they showed in the rain against Tetbury, then they will go far this season.
